How to see the exact time an Instagram post was published (Chrome extension)

Last updated: May 1, 2026

Instagram shows when a post was shared using relative timestamps such as “1h”, “2d” or “1w”. It does not display the exact publication time in its standard interface.

For journalists, researchers, social media managers and anyone needing to verify when something was posted, this can be a problem. Relative timestamps change as time passes and do not allow for precise comparisons between posts.

To address this, I built a free Chrome extension (using AI) that reveals the exact date and time (down to the second) for Instagram posts, reels, comments and direct messages.

See the Privacy Policy here.

What the tool does

The Exact Time Viewer for Instagram Chrome extension displays the precise timestamp for Instagram content directly alongside Instagram’s existing time labels.

Instead of seeing:

“1h”

You will see:

· 2026-01-15 21:34:18 AEDT

The timestamp updates automatically as new content loads and does not require clicking, inspecting page source, or using developer tools.

Why exact timestamps are not visible on Instagram

Instagram posts contain an exact timestamp in their underlying metadata (embedded in the page as a machine-readable datetime value). However, Instagram’s interface surfaces only relative time indicators to users.

Because the exact timestamp is not shown in the UI, users cannot easily determine the precise posting time without technical inspection or third-party tools.

This makes tasks such as verification, documentation and comparison more difficult.

Use cases

This tool is designed for situations where precise timing matters, including:

  • Verifying when a post or reel was published
  • Comparing the order of posts across multiple accounts
  • Fact-checking screenshots or claims
  • Tracking the spread of content during breaking news
  • Documenting social media activity for reporting or legal purposes

Features

  • Displays exact date and time with seconds
  • Appears inline next to Instagram’s relative timestamp
  • Works on posts, reels and comments
  • Defaults to Australian timezones (though has the ability to change this by right clicking the plugin once installed and clicking options)
  • Optional 12-hour or 24-hour clock
  • No tracking or external network requests

How to install the Chrome extension

The extension is distributed as an unpacked Chrome extension.

Installation steps

  1. Download the extension Download the
Exact Time Viewer for Instagram – Chrome Extension
  2. Open Instagram Visit https://www.instagram.com.
Exact timestamps will appear automatically as you scroll.

Customising display settings

The extension includes an options page where you can adjust how timestamps are displayed.

To access it:

  1. Click the Extensions puzzle icon in Chrome
  2. Pin Exact Time Viewer for Instagram (if it isn’t already pinned)
  3. Right-click the extension icon
  4. Select Options

You can change:

  • Timezone (for example: Australia/Sydney)
  • 12-hour or 24-hour clock
  • Whether seconds are displayed
  • Whether timestamps appear inline, as tooltips, or both

Privacy and data handling

  • The extension runs entirely in your browser
  • No data is sent externally
  • No analytics or tracking scripts are used
  • Settings are stored locally using Chrome’s extension storage

Summary

Instagram contains exact publication times for posts, but those timestamps are not shown to users by default. Instead, relative time labels are displayed, limiting precision.

This Chrome extension exposes the existing timestamp data in a clear, readable format, making it easier to verify exactly when Instagram content was published.
